Raging climate debate fails to sway public

posted Aug 25, 2011 8:28 PM by Peter Morgan

A CSIRO survey has been published recently which I find reassuring for the finding that 90 % of people still think that climate change is important, it worries them and they believe that climate change will harm them personally. But I find it disturbing that over 50% of people, if i have read that right, don't believe that Climate change is man made.

I find it unsurprising that poll questions such as "Until we are sure that global warming is really a problem, we should not take steps that would have economic costs." are not the most reliable indicaters of public sentiment and are at best poor polling technique at worst disingenious to say the least.

Read the article for yourself.

Plant a tree, soak up some carbon

posted Jul 13, 2011 5:55 AM by Peter Morgan

Apparently Urban areas are assumed to contain no vegetation for the purposes of Carbon Sink calculations but in a recent study there is considerable potential for cities to soak up carbon. http://www.theage.com.au/environment/climate-change/cities-can-help-soak-up-carbon-study-20110712-1hbnu.html

We said Yes. Let's hope people are listening.

Worriers to Warriors

posted May 14, 2011 5:17 AM by Climate Change Our Future

Just over 50 people attended the fascinating talk on Beyond Zero Emissions hosted by CCOF on 5th May.  Jens Rumoller, an energy sector engineer, introduced the evening by outlining the environmental and economic challenges facing the planet and how other countries, such as Germany, have led the way in implementing renewable energy technology. Ken McGregor, physicist and associate of BZE, outlined how Australia's future energy needs could be met using existing renewables technology, particular solar thermal plants.  After the talk the speakers and James a representative of BZE answered questions from the floor which was a real highlight.  A number of people came away with a real sense that as optimistic as the plan is that it is achievable but only if the political will to implement it. For more info on the plan go to http://www.beyondzeroemissions.org/. They are currently hard at work looking at Transport and Buildings and you can read and hear more about this and other zero emission talk on 3CR on Monday and Fridays see beyondzero for details.

The title for this post comes from a slip of the tongue made by James talking about his decision to not just worry about all this climate change stuff but to focus his energy on looking for solutions. It summed up the evening for me, that we need warriors not worriers to achieve lasting change to a course of action that just makes sense we should be putting all our energy into..

We are ramping up for the 5th May but there is always time for a bit of tele. This Thursday at 8pm check out "The Oil Crunch" on ABC's Catalyst. There is a interesting article related to this in the Age even more interesting comments.

Related to this is the Documentary Gaslands. There is a trailer and an interview with the filmmaker here. Trust me it is explosive stuff.

Who else is going Renewable

Do you get the impression that we are the only ones even debating whether renewable energy is a good idea.
Well think again.

Here is a snapshot of what is happening in Central America
And in China
And in the European Union they are planning 20% renewables by 2020

The Beyond Zero Emissions plan is bolder 100% in the same time frame.
